Sergey;

Here is but one more offering as to might be a good starting place for anyone interested in Dot NET.

Your question about Dot .NET books is a good one. According to some books and articles I have read version 1.1 of Dot NET has between 3000 and 6000 classes. You are left to choose the number that you think is correct!

The number of books published about Dot NET is equivalent to the number of classes stated above. In my book that hurts!

Everyone has a different take on what comprises a good book on any subject and this is no different. I do not have the time to read or money to buy each Dot NET book that is out there. Add to that the number of free tutorials, etc. and you have a complex subject made just that more difficult. We are overwhelmed with information and misinformation.

I must admit to having a dozen or so Dot NET books. The one I have that I think is a great starting place is Murach C# ISBN 1-890774-22-7.

Compare it to Amazon

Why do I like it? Glad I asked! :)

If you are using Visual Studio you will enjoy the use of the IDE in this book. Some books use Notepad rather than Visual Studio as the tool of choice. It is a good beginner’s book and contains good information on creating and using classes, object-oriented programming, and database programming. There is a lot of good and useful material in this one publication. It does not cover every subject under the cover of Dot NET but sets you off in the right direction to understand and be productive.

Also, I recommend the Murach books on VB.NET ISBN 1-890774-15-4, ASP.NET ISBN 1-890774-20-0 and ADO.NET ISBN 1-890774-19-7.

These books have an interesting format. The left page contains the “meat and potatoes” and the right facing page is a reference. The Table of Contents and Index are excellent, which is something important to me. You will learn something of value from each of these publications. I find myself going to the C # book most often as I decided on using that as my primary language for Dot NET.

I started with the VB.NET books I must admit. After creating my first application in VB.NET I converted it to C #. I will return to VB.NET only if I have to. VB.NET lets you get away with things that will result in problems later! In C # you do it correctly or the compiler will let you know! :)

Happy Sunday and enjoy Memorial Day. Now it is off to church for me, a family get together and some flamenco. Now where did I put my guitar!
