Technically, that depends on the subnet mask. A subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 is fairly common - this means that the first 24 bits represent the net/subnet, and the last 8 bits (one byte) the individual host (computer).
But, for example, my ISP assigned me a subnet mask of 255.255.252.0, meaning that the assignable IP addresses in the same subnet as I am can be anywhere in the range from 172.20.20.1 to 172.20.23.254.
