There are several ways to execute another windows program (via the API). If RUN works, and does what you need to do, that may be the best. Look also at the numbers that you can add to the /N switch. These will let you control the window state of the application.

BTW, as far as DDE goes, I believe it's tied into Windows messaging services, which means, I believe, that it won't be going away anytime soon. I used it a lot back in FPW 2.6 to retrieve data from spreadsheets without problems.
