Capture the output to a file and then look through it with hexedit() you should be able to detect the differences in the two print streams to see what's going on.

Also I believe that Epson printers have a diagnostic mode (you have to hold down a certain combination of keys while powering on the printer) where they will hexdump the information so that you can see exactly what command codes it's getting.
