I don't like the image (bmp) idea (it just doesn't sound dynamic enough for me).
No I quess it doesn't have to be a font and that is why I have started down another path. I am creating a custom control and using the OnPaint event I can draw my own 9-segment LED look-alike display. (I figured I have to make a "real" custom control in .NET some time and today seemed like a good time).
If they (read engineers) only displayed digits I could use the 7-segment font, but they are showing some characters in the 9-segment display and they use those additional 2 segments for that.

Ohh well back to the OnPaint() event
