I agree for reindex and select without doubt. Seek and update might depend on the app: on write heavy apps the relatively marked speedup might be of value. In one of my seek-heavy apps I switched a few non-structural cdx (already on a RAMDisk) to idx and gained a few percent - nothing much but easy to do because the groundwork for non-structural indices was already there. The biggest boon seems to be not on (string-)compound "helper indeces" but for integer pk and fk's, but *there* I wouldn't forgo the "safety" and automatism of structural indices against manually managed files.
