>Sylvia, here's a simpler example: Think of a grid with a numeric field. If this column is active, you want the user to be able to use a spinner to change the value. However, you only want the ACTIVE cell in the column to show the spinner. An entire column of spinners is confusing to the user. So you have 2 controls, the basic text box for inactive cells and the spinner for the active cell. You control this with SPARSE = .F.

Thanks, that was a helpful example. In fact, I have created a grid which displays a spinner in the entire column and you're right, it is confusing.
