Of course he's kidding. He'd be a honorary citizen of my town for that - never letting on when he's kidding or not. If the joke doesn't work, never mind. If it does, it's impolite to laugh to your own joke before the others get it. The purpose of the smiley in this case was to cause even more confusion.

The point in case is that he can't have one different picture. He can have two different pictures, or one different and one the same, or two same pictures. I figure this logical exercise was left to the reader.
