The problem arose when we ware asked to fill in the blanks. I hurt .. (myself). She burnt .. (herself). They hit .. (themselves). You scratch ..... ?
Of course the sentences were longer than this, so it was always possible to understand whether it was singular or plural from the context. So the last sentence could be "You stand alone and scratch ....." or "Edith and you watch .... on TV".
