GB had millions of little train stations all over the place, before the 50's. 1st the canals were the main thoroughfares, then (being the 1st industrialised nation) the trains. In the 50's, like in LA, it was predicted that the car would become the mainstay, and small stations became uneconomical, and were closed down. There are different terms in USA and UK, e.g. we don't call it a city till (usually) it has a cathedral and/or pretty big. We still have thousands of little hamlets all over the Isle that have railway stations. ANd, hey, with a tourist trap place name like that on your station picket fence, would YOU close it down? :-)
