And when I stepped through the code, it totally removed my toolbar... not sure why. When I get home tonight I'll look at it again..

Thanks a lot for helping me. I solved the problem by adding custom code in form's Activate after dodefault to always enable cmdClose and conditionally disable cmdNew....
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
