Other than that, the majority of the affordable places when I was in Europe (and central America) all shared bathrooms. I always asked when I travelled in Europe if the room had its own separate bathroom, and I usually was told yes, but then on arrival found out that no, it had to share a bathroom with other rooms. There is nothing better than your own bathroom. OK, call me American.
Call me spoiled... but I'll agree with you. I can't remember when was the last time I was in a hotel with a shared bathroom. And that's not solely in USA - even in Hungary, during a fair, when the secretary was told to find "cheap accomodations"... we were in a remodeled workers' appartments, which meant everything was quite barren, beds were a bit hard, food was below the Hungarian standard (which is quite high, though) - but it had a bathroom.
