Please email me privately, and let me know who you talked to here at Microsoft.

There are 2 distinct situations where optimization does not occur, one when CPDBF() does not match CPCurrent() (as in the Wiki below), and a 2nd with SET ANSI ON and variable length character index expressions. Your code looks like situation 2, but you refer to situation 1 below.

I'd like to get this sorted out.

>Sorry just got off the phone with Microsoft and it's a bug. The lastest version if the runtime incorrectly could'nt handle non fixed length fields. They have work around till then. They said ANSI ON or OFf won't fix it.
