Yes they are... when I was a system manager on a VAX, I had hard time translating that to people who knew only IBM's big iron. Once I explained what was my job about, they'd say "ah, a system programmer - why didn't you say so right away".
They really had a language of their own. Well, so does Microsoft. We're lucky that there was no copyright law around when hammers, chairs etc were invented, or else they'd all be called differently, depending on the manufacturer.
