You seem to have missed that President Reagan is now a figure of mythic proportions in the U.S. I have absolutely no doubt that a huge majority of U.S. citizens would name President Reagan as the greatest president of the 20th century.
Among his credits are:
- Giving the U.S. back it's "can do" attitude (by, amongst other things, 'warring' with the mighty and dangerous Grenada);
- Single-handedly killing Communism (never mind that China, North Korea and Cuba are STILL communist regimes);
- Reaganomics "trickle down" (never mind that it made the rich richer and the poor poorer and that the U.S. deficit balooned during it all);
- Returning truth and morality to government (ignoring Iran/Contra and who knows what else);
- "The great communicator" (which undoubtedly he was).
No matter the details, he did give his people back their pride when things were pretty grim for a long while. That's a big achievment for any leader.
cheers
