Usually I only use MS Paints. Try to do this step:
- Open the BMP file
- On "Image" menu, select "Attributes"
- On "Attributes" dialog, select "Black and white" colors, OK.
- Select "Yes" on the warning dialog
- Press Ctrl-Z
- Save As to "whatever" with monochrome bitmap
- Rename the saved file to "YourBMP.MSK"
