I have to use the tools my company supplies and Visual Studio 2003 is one of them. I do like ASP.NET even if it is a pain where I sit down but it is light years ahead of ASP 3.0, and I make good use of it! For desktop applications I create from home I like VFP for most jobs.

There was a long marketing campaign by Microsoft before Dot NET went to production. Questions about how it would interact and play with what products and lots of hype were floating around for about two years raised questions from many. The product was delayed as it had problems. The third iteration is about to be released and has the usual promises of being all things to all people.

There is a term I recall: “A solution looking for a problem”. I think that defines Dot NET. First create the solution and then look for the problem. :)

We should start a thread about ADO.NET. I have heard a few things from inside Microsoft that are interesting - like the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing.
