I like the analogy - but let's not go too fast here. The elastic in those shorts is pretty loose! They could still fall down....

Faking it in Politics may be OK, but in software development I would consider it less a potential source of embarrassment and more of a fundamental flaw that can destroy a company's credibility forever.
