What I heard was that 'elegant' (read rich) women did not dress themselves as rich men did. It was easier for the lady's dresser to button things up with the buttons on the left hand side since they were doing it backward, while men found it easier to have the buttons on the right side since they dressed themselves.

At least, that's what I heard.
