My piece of mind is my reward for doing right, and unease if I've done a wrong is my punishment. That's called consciousness, and if any imaginary entity wants to have a say about it - well so be it, they're also entitled to their own opinion. Doesn't mean that that opinion would matter any to me.

IOW, "if I want to live among the people" - meaning the man is a zoon politikon, a social being, and if I'm breaking the rules of the society, then I'd have to bear the consequences. Doesn't necessarily mean I'm afraid of these consequences, and surely means that most often there's absolutely no reward for doing good.
