A quick review of the links you provided led me to this 'quick' conclusion:

There is no BEST way. Metaphone, Dbl Metaphone, Improved Soundex and Levenshtein seem to beat ech other in some cases and lose miserably in others.

It looks like a combination is the only way to get closer to 100%. The quick tests I made caught new things but failed where Levenshtein had shone.

I'm particularly interested in testing the Levenshtein you pointed out against my version. Yours seems a lot simpler and neater. I'm wonder if it'll improve my speed.
