I don't know about in Canada, but in Europe diesel is much cleaner than it is here in the States and the cars don't smell so bad. The European car makers have different versions of cars that sell in Europe versus those that get exported to the States. Supposedly it's going to get better here soon, but for now in the States I certainly wouldn't want a diesel car. You're right that they're smelly.
