The only addition I have to what Craig said is that you can also program the scanner to send values before, after or both the value scanned. This can be useful if you need to do some processing when the bar code is scanned. For example, I have a weigh station app that truckers weigh their own trucks. If the trucker as a load ticket that has a bar code, I can automatically initiate the start procedures and then fill in the ticket number on the screen.
