Thanks for your input. I can see that it is possible to create the effect. After trying Fabio's example, it seems a pretty big tradeoff. In my case the user may have hundreds of items of several different types. Since I am using the list box to navigate through a table, it seems a waste of overhead to populate a third party (menu/prompts) with data that I'll need to read and search for again when the user makes a selection. Just because I want different colors in a list box. I think I agree with Christof and would rather work with the grid when dynamic colors are involved. Fabio's example would be fine for a static type menu/list that would only need to be set up once.
