You might not know the answer to this coming from Texas, but what about cold weather starts. The biggest problem I had with my diesel, was that in very cold weather it was a lottery whether or not the car would start. At home I could plug it in, so it was no problem, but I commute to work and there are no plug ins at the commuter parking lots. When I got home from work it was always a wish and a prayer on starting the car.

Can I assume that the newer diesels have also overcome this issue?

One last thing about diesel is that the car costs more, so if you don't really drive much, the savings on fuel will take a very long time to pay back the difference in car price.
