Aye well he's Irish! What do you expect? No, the chippy close to where I work I've just trained the server to do vinegar & salt, rather than the other way round, which is fairly universal. As for malt vinegar only, they do provide a colourless vinegar, somewhat "onionated" as coming from the jar of pickled onions that are also sold in chippies, for those who prefer it.
