>There is a concept of hating the sin but loving the sinner. You may not believe that people can actually live up to that standard. You may be right that it is merely a platitude and deep down inside they really hate both. Based on the example of my sister-in-law, I tend to disagree with you on that.

Yes, mine is of the "...deep down inside..." variety when it comes to the deep (read that as radical if you wish) religious believers. I suspect there may be some, who practise a more level-headed Christianity, who can actually be like your sister-in-law.

I can see living up to the standard of "hating the sin but loving the sinner", but not when it comes to religion. For instance, if my son was one of the London murderers I would still love him while hating is action.

But all the evidence I see tells me that those deep religious believers professing to think that way but have additional 'standards' that make them act very differently.
For instance, they have additional 'rules' that make it necessary to take every opportunity to convert unbelievers, often by in-your-face tactics.
For instance, Franklin Graham suggesting to "use all weapons available" to eradicate terrorism was really saying to rid the world of non-Christians. How "loving"! But I guess he sees it as "loving"... loving of God.
For instance, Howard's worming his way into this thread to do what he believes he must do - to promote the word of God at every opportunity.
