IOW, when you "Send to Back", it means ... Send to the back of the objects for this band ... any previous bands will still print those objects first. This can cause problems when you are stretching lines from one band to another.

Thanks Cathy and Bo, this at least explains what's going on. Cathy, I'm not sure what you mean when you suggest playing with the mode. How do you do that? If its in the menus somewhere its not obvious.
