I believe it is less trouble to keep the image files as separate files on disk, and to keep only the filename in a character or memo field. With General fields, you use much more space (the difference is more drastic with compressed images, such as JPG), it is difficult to get the images back out of the general field, and you run the risk of eventually passing the VFP 2 GB limit.
