I've never heard of a situation where an app "doing nothing" stopped functioning as you describe. As I see it there are 2 possibilities:

1. Your app actually is doing something - a scheduled background task, acting as a COM server or .DLL - and it's hitting an error condition that's causing itself to shut down or the OS to kill it. If you have an ON ERROR handler active in your app you could check its log.

2. Your app is not actually shutting down - it's somehow losing its UI. Next time it happens, check your Task Manager and see if the executable process is actually still running.
