Where do you get this from? Conservatives are intolerant by definition. They are the ones who historically are:
- anti civil rights
- anti womens rights
- anti gay rights
- anti immigrant
- anti abortion
Conservatives have difficult putting themselves in other peoples shoes. Yes, many conservatives have been opposed to civil rights, have wanted to overturn Roe v. Wade, etc.
However, that doesn't mean that conservatives "by definition" are intolerant. Conservatism is "supposed" to mean limited role of the federal government, with the prime role being the protection of rights and liberties. I consider myself very conserative, and I also believe in a color-blind society, support Roe v. Wade and personally couldn't care less if 2 adult homosexuals want to marry. One of our country's embarrassing shortcomings is this pre-occupation with sexual preference.
Also, remember that some folks "to the left" were opposed to Martin Luther King and other movements that tried to preserve individual rights. And let's not forget the ACLU, which in the early 1980's came down AGAINST a teen-age Russian boy who wanted to stay in the United States (amazing how they have no problem with 16 year olds getting condoms without parent's permission....yet have a problem with a teenager wanting to avoid a life in a communist regime).
Conservatism and liberalism, in practice, are both about using government powers for different means. The way they go about it sometimes produces different appearances.
