It turns out that some of the tables CAN be zapped, and append from'd - the ones that don't have any graphic objects to worry about. But in the command window, for practice, I've selected a target table (the Foxplus one - which is perfectly manipulatable in VFP) and tried to do append from the main table. But nothing happens - no data appended. I've never come across this before. Could it be anything to do with the target table's "pedigree"?
