Here is what I think happens... when you log onto MSN Messenger, it gets the unread messages, and stores that until you log in again. Maybe somebody logged in, had 1 message, and never logged in again.

Not sure, I usually have some pretty farfetched ideas. In any case, it has been an annoyance to me, but I have ignored it until this point.
