That's the point. Perhaps you should'nt give in. I know that this could be expensive (perhaps not) but as Tamar pointed out you should contact a lawyer.

If I was the one that developed that software and considering our laws and what you told us I'd be the legal owner of the software.

You're wondering why?

1. No contract signed between parties.
2. Not an employee of that enterprise.
3. Not working on their computers to develop that software.
4. No secret formulas withing the software. I mean if there are the only ones in that industry doing something in an exclusive way then they own that piece of the software. Still the rest of the software belongs to the developer.

Some things I could forget but you get the idea. That's why seeing a lawyer to clarify this could be really good for you.
