I make 8 x 10s in PowerPoint of a mixture of photo and text. I then make PDFs of them for others and ocasionaly make a JPG of the PDF file to share it with others. The PowerPoint printout is perfect, but printing a 8 x 10 of the JPG is not bad at all.

Oddly enough the photo part is very good. It's the fonts that really shows the degarade in the quality. If you'd like to see an example, visit my site at www.wonderley.com.
