At this time I'm working with a module to produce monthly an automated report with some graphs and data taken from diferent sources. You can see the report (not terminated) at http://www.esenios.org/reporte.pdf. Despite it is in spanish, I think it shows the general idea, but if you consider convinient, feel free to question me about it.

I'm using a product called csXGraph.ocx that is available at www.chestysoft.com. However, if you need to produce more complex graphs a very good product is the TeeChart available at www.steema.com (very nice graphs!)

Actually, I don't recomend to automate Excel to produce tha graph. It could be hard to achive, and in a concurrent scenario, very difficult to control the different versions of Excel.
