OK, let's make the following assumption

The US was not going to stop fighting unilaterally

Under that assumptions

What is the likelihood Japan would have surrendered once it became clear that defeat was inevitable. (My estimate approaches zero)

What is the likelihood of a negotiated settlement? (My estimate is slightly higher depending upon US reaction to likely Soviet activity in Europe, but I'm not sure Japan would have been willing to negotiate a settlement).

How many military casulties would Japan have suffered?

How many civilian casulties would Japan have suffered?

Balance the numbers and, since horror is inevitable, I prefer the horror of the bomb to the prolonged horror with many times more casulties of a protracted invasion campaign.
