If this doesn't work, you might consider creating a dual boot after making the image. Perhaps the old app will work when called from the W98 boot - if no other checks on used hardware are included this could have less problems than XP like for instance hard coded OS-paths or other non-portable stuff.

I'ld keep the old clunker around for some time to make sure no problems arise <g>.
