I don't think that matters. Outlook will send with whatever is configured. The message formatting is separate from that. You may actually have issues on the client that is INTERPRETING the message differently than Outlook sent it.

I never use Outlook for any sort of generic application to send email precisely because you never know exactly what Outlook does with message formats. That and the security configuration issues...

For end user apps SMTP just gives you more reliable control even if it requires proper setup.
