universal naming convention. you specify a path as \\myserver\volume\dir1\subdir1 instead of using an absolute drive letter (F:\AppDir\Data). One, it saves the use of a drive mapping, and, two, it doesn't lock you into having to have a specific drive letter (allows more flexibility -- my F: may be someone else's G:, then you have a problem).
