OK, so I assume 40 is the total width.
I don't know about your model, but in the standard Epson dot-matrix printers you can select between 10 CPI, 12 CPI, 15 CPI and 17 CPI; if your printer supports it, perhaps you may want to adjust the CPI (characters per inch) for some purposes.
