They don't throw it but bowl it, in a similar manner to lobbing a hand grenade, with a straight arm. Originally the ball WAS delivered in an underarm bowl, but the action has evolved. Actually, if you inspect the ball you'll notice that it is extremely hard and has a single equitorial stitched, slighly raised seam (instead of a soft ball with a meandering seam) and, as such, does actually resemble a bowling ball (not as in 10-pin, but crown green bowling)

Neither would your legs be cut-down trees if the rest of them were cut off. Oh, and I think you will find that they DO come from cut-down trees :-)
