Yes, there are many ways to increase space... either by adding another dimension, displaying only portions at a time, or even increasing the space (as with dual monitors). I think multiple desktops are very useful... first ran into this on a linux box. All of it is very interesting and seems to me that there is still a ton of innovation to be had in this area. For instance... the work that is being done by t-immersion with dfusion is pretty interesting. They call the technology Augmented Reality.
