Ehhhhh... don't get me started.

Years ago, when MS-DOS was invented, it looks like Bill didn't know the world is a little bigger than US's borders. They have an 256 items array to store the letters and the rest of the characters (they looked to be enough at that time). Some time later they wanted to go international. Verrryyy niccee... Problem was they had to represent more letters than in english alphabet. What to do? they had already lots of OS'es sold! Instead cutting the cat's tail, guess what, they have made an improvisation: Code Pages. This means the last 128 chars are replaced with some others, stored in a so-called "code page". In other words, the operating system (which shows the same 256 matrix) replaces the content of the 128-255 area of the matrix.

For example, Tahoma has 1440 letters. If I'm not mistaken, Arial Unicode has even more (it's a hell of a file - about 20 mb!). Ok, enough talking about this.

In Windows 2000, XP and 2003 (I'm not sure about NT - never used it) they have provided a way to use non-unicode apps (VFP is an example) with a specific code page - you can set this in Control Panel/Regional Settings, Advanced tab. In Windows9x this is not possible. The only way is to set the Regional settings as you want, then reinstall the OS over the existing one! Don't blame me, I'm just the messenger :). Blame M$.
