The shorter alternative is crystal clear to me. And, IMNSHO, it should be quite clear to other VFP experts as well.

It seems to me that most other languages support shortcut boolean evaluation as well.

Sometimes. In the example I gave, I have the impression that the additional IF causes an innecessary increase of complexity.
