Thanks for the additional details about BINARY indexes.

Does your explanation mean that BINARY indexed fields can't participate in WHERE X = Y type SQL join conditions, only WHERE X conditions?

The help documentation is confusing in that it says that BINARY index values can be any value but NULL.
