I have merge replication working between 2 locations and find it to work fine when it works. However, when it doesn't work you don't always know. Non-merge replication schemes are probably more tolerant, but you might consider some 3rd-party tools to periodically verify the replication. http://www.red-gate.com/ has some good ones.
