Robert Heinlein put it very nicely when he said that the unfortunate problem with politics is that the voters only get to vote for those who lust for power. A person who is not into power doesn't run for office.

Here in Canada, we get (IMHO) fairly rotten choices, but on the assumption that you have to vote for somebody, we vote for the one we hope will be the least destructive.

We listen to the lies, knowing full well that they are probably lies, and we choose the one with whose lies we feel the most comfortable.

Then, of course, we get the government we deserve. But my having voted gives me, if nothing else, at least the right to complain about whoever is in power.
