>>>The basic idea is to solve certain conflicts according to the religion of the people involved, which seems a good idea in principle (Christians being able to apply Christian laws, etc.).
>>>
>>>The protests have been mainly because Sharia can conflict with women's rights. But the proponents of allowing Sharia for Muslims say that that will not be allowed. In other words, it seems that the applicaton of Sharia would be limited.

>>A good idea? Not here! Separation of Religion and State (here called Church and State) is a basic idea of democracy. Practice religion at home and Mosque, Temple, Church, not in the Courts. Stoning someone, even though it is OK in the Bible and Koran, is still a crime in any modern country, including Bolivia. Unfortunately not in places like Saudi Arabia, Iran or Nigeria.

>Well, I think that many people are fond of their religion, including its laws. Now, I wasn't exactly suggesting that people should be stoned, and I don't think the Canadian law - if it is ever approved - would go that far.

I see a huge problem with this...
1. It seems that it would be those STRONG on their religion who would push this to the extent that it is about to be implemented.
2. People who are strong on anything, but most especially religion, are never happy until it is THEIR FULL DOCTRINE that is in place.
3. People who are strong on religion will, as anyone else who is strong in any position, will interpret the rules in unexpected ways that will further their own desire for their full position to be realized.

An excerpt of an essay titled "The Origins of Islamic Law" says: "The Sharia comes from the Koran, the sacred book of Islam, which Muslims consider the actual word of God. The Sharia also stems from the Prophet Muhammad’s teachings and interpretations of those teachings by certain Muslim legal scholars.".
We have, in the Muslim FUNDAMENTALIST movements, examples of how "interpretations of those teachings by certain Muslim legal scholars" (the fundaamentalists are undoubtedly not lawyers, but they don't care) lead to organzied hatred of the western world and the U.S. in particular. This is hardly different that many Christian FUNDAMENTALISTS running around today spewing hatred for anything non-Christian.

There is just no way that any subset of Sharia Law will remain acceptable in Ontario or anywhere else where western law is the base.
