>The trick is simple. Find a blank, transparent piece of negative and set your white balance on it - that's the color of white (or black, if you want to think in positive terms) that it gives you. You should find out how to do that on your camera - should be somewhere in the menus, or have a button for that. Note that this background color may be different between rolls of negative - different manufacturer, lab, speed, even lab temperature (how fresh were the developer and fixers?) etc etc. So for best results you should recalibrate the color for each roll. Luckily, it's just two to five clicks on most cameras.

Great idea! I had even thought while playing around with it in the software “it’s too bad that I didn’t know of something black in the photo.” It never dawned on me that an unexposed part of the film was the perfect black.

I am surprised that there isn’t one set thing (or things) to do that would be right for every negative, or at least very close. After all, my scanner doesn’t differentiate between the different negatives and I think the color is right, and Randy mentioned that he likes what his film scanner does. Maybe they are smart enough to determine unexposed film and adjust. That would be pretty impressive.

I’ll try playing around with the white balance on the camera, but I won’t be able to come up with a blank frame for each roll. In some cases, the strips of negatives have gotten all jumbled and it may be hard to even get the rolls together.

I’ll also play around with a software answer I find acceptable. When I was playing around in Digital Image Suite, there were all sorts of settings that I did not understand and I never did get even close. Hopefully, this will help. At least I now have something to do tonight. Thanks.
